Bios, in three lengths

Use the short bio for programs, conference apps and social. Use the long bio for a website speaker page or press. For the stage, don't read a bio at all — use the introduction script in the next section.

Short bio

~100 words

Jay Boykin is a keynote speaker and organizational transformation strategist whose work rests on one conviction: most conflict isn't about intent; it's about interpretation.

Drawing on nearly three decades of experience leading finance and accounting teams in publicly-traded companies, Jay founded Just Human after discovering that fear-based leadership and unchecked misinterpretation were quietly dismantling the teams he cared about most. He now works with CHROs, CEOs, and leadership teams to install the behavioral infrastructure that turns disconnected individuals into high-performing, high-trust organizations using his own Just Human Philosophy.

Jay doesn't just deliver inspiration. He delivers results.

Full bio

~300 words

Jay Boykin knows what it costs to be misread in a room full of people who should be on your side.

Early in his career as a Vice President and Controller navigating the high-stakes world of finance and accounting for publicly-traded companies, Jay was thrown out of an executive meeting, not because of what he did, but because of how it was interpreted. That moment didn't break him. It clarified him. He realized that most organizational dysfunction isn't a talent problem, a strategy problem, or even a leadership problem. It's an interpretation problem.

That conviction became the foundation of the Just Human Philosophy.

Jay spent the majority of his career leading finance and accounting teams across small to mid-sized publicly-traded companies. He also served as Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; work that deepened his understanding of how identity, perception, and behavioral style shape every professional interaction. When he inherited a team that had spent years being led through fear, he didn't reach for the traditional leadership playbook. He threw it out. What emerged was a new framework, one built on the radical premise that people are 99.9% the same, and that the 0.1% difference has been inflated by misread tone, assumed intent, and the stories we tell ourselves into the 100% that defines how we see our colleagues, our teams, and our cultures.

Today, Jay is a keynote speaker and organizational transformation strategist who works with CHROs, CEOs, and leadership teams to build the self-awareness, team alignment, and shared purpose that turn disconnected individuals into high-performing, high-trust organizations. His methodology is not theoretical, it is built on his own Just Human Philosophy.

The result is not just a great talk. It is a culture shift, with receipts.

02 — For the stage

Introduction script

Please use this instead of a bio. It's written to build, and it sets up the opening of the talk. Roughly 90 seconds read aloud.

Read by the emcee

~90 seconds

Delivery note — Read slowly and with intention. Pause at the line breaks. This introduction is designed to build.

Early in his career, our next speaker was thrown out of an executive meeting.

Not for what he did. For how it was interpreted.

That moment could have ended his confidence. Instead, it launched a conviction. One that has since shaped the way hundreds of leaders think, communicate, and lead.

Jay Boykin spent nearly three decades in finance and accounting, rising to Vice President and Controller at publicly-traded companies, and also serving as Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. When he inherited a team that had been led through fear for years, he didn't manage the dysfunction. He dismantled it, and built something better in its place.

What he built became the Just Human Philosophy: a framework grounded in the idea that we share 99.9% of our DNA; and that the 0.1% difference has been inflated by misread tone, assumed intent, and the stories we tell ourselves, into the 100% that defines how we see each other at work.

Today, Jay is a keynote speaker and organizational transformation strategist. He is the founder of Just Human, a practice built to move organizations from fleeting inspiration to lasting behavioral change. He is also the author of Just Human: Rediscovering Our Shared Humanity in a Divisive World.

He doesn't just ask you to think differently.

He gives you the tools to actually be different on Monday morning.

Please welcome Jay Boykin.

03 — Programs

Signature keynotes

Each runs 45–60 minutes and can be adapted to your theme. Descriptions are written for a program book; take them as-is or trim.

Building What Connects Us

Leadership development

A LEGO brick alone is just plastic. The stud on top and the socket underneath are its whole point — it only becomes something when it connects.

  • A three-step practice for being genuinely present in a room
  • A framework for building trust before it's needed
  • Why connection, not talent, unlocks a team's capacity

But What Do You Actually Think?

AI & transformation · Strong day-one close

Every organization is asking what AI can take over. Almost none are asking what it must never touch.

  • AI adoption reframed as a connection problem, not a tooling one
  • How to sort the week into what a machine can hold and what can't
  • Language for defending where the line was drawn

Nobody Signs Up for Leftovers

Executive & peer-advisory

You give your best self to the room that pays you, and your leftovers to the people who chose you.

  • One question to ask before walking into any room
  • A sequence for repairing a strained relationship
  • Why high performers burn their closest relationships first

Video

Start with the 90-second reel if you're socializing Jay internally. Share the full keynote footage with anyone who needs to see a whole arc before signing off.

05 — Promotional imagery

Photography

Email for the file set and it comes back the same day. Tell us which of these you need and at what size — it saves a round trip.

Headshots
High-resolution, horizontal and vertical crops. Suitable for conference programs, event websites and press.
On stage
Action shots mid-talk with audience visible. Use these for promotion — planners consistently report they outperform studio headshots on registration pages.
Print sizes
300 dpi at your placed dimensions. Say where it's going (step-and-repeat, program cover, slide) and the right file comes back.
Web sizes
2400 px on the long edge covers almost every event site and social placement.
06 — Technical

Staging & AV requirements

Please forward this section to your AV crew and planning committee. If these aren't in place, the session doesn't land the way it should.

Microphone
In order of preference:
  1. Hands-free — lavalier or Countryman
  2. Wireless handheld
  3. Handheld with at least 30 feet of cord
Sound system tested for proper operation before doors.
Stage
Well-lit, open and empty. A podium is optional — Jay works the full stage and won't stand behind one.
House lights
Left up far enough that Jay can see faces from the stage. The talk depends on reading the room; a blacked-out house removes that.
Seating
Theater-style, directly in front of the stage, as close as the room allows. No seating behind or to the side of the speaker.
Resource table
One table beside the room exit for resources and signing.
After the talk
A 15-minute break immediately following, so Jay can meet audience members, sign and take photos. Please don't schedule a session against it.
Green room
Two bottles of water, room temperature.
Tech check
30 minutes on the actual stage with the actual microphone before doors open.
One conflict to watch: the theater seating above is for the keynote only. If the day also includes a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshop, that session needs the room reset to tables — see the next section. Please don't book both into one fixed-seating room.
07 — Workshop only

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® room setup

Applies only when the engagement includes a build session. These requirements are not optional — the methodology depends on every participant having hands on bricks and a clear sight line to every other participant's model.

Tables
Rounds or rectangles seating 8–12. One table set per 12 participants. No classroom rows, no fixed theater seating.
Surface
Each participant needs roughly 30 inches of clear table width. Bricks spread wide during a build — a crowded table shuts the method down.
Room
Space to walk fully around every table. Participants present their models standing, and Jay moves table to table throughout.
Lighting
Full room lighting up for the entire session. No stage-lit, darkened-house configuration.
Audio
In rooms over 40 participants, a hands-free mic for Jay plus one roving handheld for participant share-outs.
Materials
Brick kits are supplied. Confirm final participant count no later than three weeks out so kit coverage is right.
Setup access
60 minutes in the room before participants arrive, to lay out kits by seat.
08 — If you haven't booked yet

How an engagement starts

Week 1

Discovery call

90 minutes. Jay learns the specific pain, the team dynamics and what success actually looks like. No proposal until he understands the real problem.

Week 1–2

Proposal

A written recommendation with one or two options, built from what was said on the call — not a template.

Week 2

Agreement

A clean agreement and a deposit to secure the date. No bloated SOW.

Weeks 3–4

Kickoff

Date locked, logistics confirmed, participants identified, pre-work sent to the team.
