Why the name
We share 99.9% of our DNA. Most of what pulls a team apart lives in the other 0.1%.
The difference is real, and it is small. The trouble starts when we treat it as the whole story and forget everything we hold in common.
This newsletter is about the 99.9%: noticing it, and doing something useful with it. One idea at a time, in a few minutes, from someone who has spent 35 years leading people and still gets it wrong sometimes.
The archive
Past issues worth your ten minutes.
Earlier issues, published under the newsletter’s first name, The Book of Jay. Every one is archived here on this site.
The Missing 1% Behind Your Burnout
If you feel off even while your life looks “fine,” you don’t have a motivation problem, you have an alignment problem. You push harder, add tools, stack habits, stay busy. You stay tired.

“What do you do with a problem? What do you do with a chance? What do you do with an idea?” Those aren’t just personal-growth questions, they’re the things that hit us at work, in business, and at home. And sometimes we hide them.

What if the move that changes your culture isn’t about being louder, it’s about being later? Most leaders lead first: first to talk, first to decide, first to act. This one’s about a different move. Lead last.

“You don’t have to know everything. But you do have to know who to ask.” The cost of refusing help shows up in your team, your calendar, your results, and in a smoker on a Saturday afternoon.
Read the issue Feb 27, 2026The 10-minute Habit Most Couples Refuse to Try
We plan everything, money, career, meals. Most of us never plan our relationships, then act surprised when we keep having the same fight. My take: a strong relationship needs a system. Not romance. Not luck. A system.
Read the issue Feb 26, 2026Just Human Field Note #1: Why the Room Turned on the Only Honest Person
“You kicking me out of the room doesn’t change the truth.” What happens in leadership meetings when a team falls in love with a story, and you show up with facts.
Read the issue Feb 26, 2026Your team is not lazy. They feel watched.
“Have you ever worked for someone who knew all your performance numbers, but didn’t know you?” This isn’t a feelings topic, it’s a performance topic, because of what happens when people feel watched instead of seen.
Read the issue Feb 26, 2026Your Listening Might be the Problem!
Hearing is the audio part. Listening is where the connection happens. You don’t have a communication problem, you have a listening problem. You think you listen. You might not.
Read the issue Feb 26, 2026The Leadership Problem Nobody Names
“Your leadership is not defined by what you do on your best day.” Self-awareness under pressure decides how people experience you, and whether they tell you the truth. When stress hits, you go automatic and call it “getting results.”
Read the issue Feb 26, 2026Your goals are failing you. Here is why.
“This is going to be my year”, then real life hits you in February. Why resolutions collapse so fast, and what to do instead. You don’t lack discipline or drive; the problem is how most goals get built.
